51 ans depuis l’échouage du Torrey Canyon et 40 ans après la catastrophe de l’Amoco Cadiz : l’occasion d’un bilan historique

2017 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the grounding of the supertanker Torrey Canyon. But the event went virtually unnoticed. The few scientific events and rare publications of photographic albums commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Amoco Cadiz disaster give us the opportunity to look back, in the pages of one of the very first scientific journals to have dealt with the subject, on the first period in the history of marine oil pollution (from
oil pollution (from 1859 to 1900) and on a dramatic ‘misunderstanding’ that arose at the same time.
En 2017 a eu lieu le cinquantenaire de l’échouage du superpétrolier Torrey Canyon. Mais l’événement est passé quasiment inaperçu. Les quelques manifestations scientifiques et les rares publications d’albums photographiques rappelant les 40 ans de la catastrophe de l’Amoco Cadiz nous donnent l’occasion de revenir, dans les pages d’une des toutes premières revues scientifiques à avoir parlé du sujet, sur la première période de l’histoire des
pollutions marines par le pétrole (de 1859 à 1900) et sur un « quiproquo » dramatique né en même temps.
