Archaeological Franco-Albanian Mission in the Korçë Basin - MAFAK

The Franco-Albanian Archaeological Mission of the Korçë Basin in Albania was created in 1993 under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the French School of Athens in partnership with the Tirana Archaeological Institute (Instituti i Arkeologjise). Since then, it has been active in the Korçë Basin, a small inland plain with a rich archaeological heritage located in south-eastern Albania, a few kilometres from the Greek border at Chrystallopygi. The aim of the 2021-2024 quadrennium, now directed by Armelle Gardeisen, research director at the CNRS, is to finalise the work carried out in previous years in order to set up a new archaeological programme from 2022 onwards. The MAFAK Mission is supported by the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, the French School of Athens, the French Embassy in Tirana, the Paul Valéry University of Montpellier, Labex Archimede (prog. IA-ANR-11-Labx-0032-01), as well as the Archaeological Institute of Tirana, which is co-directing the Mission in the person of Ms. Rovena Kurti-Ruka, archaeologist at the Centre for Albanological Studies and Research (Qendra e Studimeve Albanologjike).
